Drop an image or two, or an idea, or even just a starter if you want, this is where all those things go, plus where I'll move things from memes when they need to be pinned down.
( Eddie nods, trying hard not to laugh at the way Steve's cheeks puff out while he's eating. How he manages to make the act of eating pizza goddamn adorable, he will never know. But Steve would almost certainly think he's laughing at their conversation, so it would be better not to allow himself that kind of reaction.
He raises an eyebrow as he considers Steve's question. )
It might. Weed would probably help, but all my usual suppliers have gotten the hell out of Hawkins after everything, so.
Seriously? [It makes sense, really, he's pretty sure the two of them should have gotten the hell out, too, along with everyone they know, but he also knows neither of them can actually leave.
Either way, memory simmers up from somewhere and he straightens] Hang on. I'm going to go check the car, I'll be right back.
[He slips past Eddie and back outside so that he can rummage through the glovebox, wiggling gleefully when what he thought was there is actually right where he thought it was and he bounds back up the steps, sliding back into the trailer and tossing Eddie a crumpled half-package of cigarettes] Emergency cigarettes. But also, extra-emergency joint.
[One that Eddie himself had given him, way back when they'd both survived the almost-end-of-the-world.]
( When Steve gets up to leave suddenly, Eddie raises and eyebrow and watches him go. It doesn't take long for him to return, and Eddie has to laugh when Steve reappears with the near-forgotten supplies, catching the pack of cigarettes when tossed to him. )
Shit, I'm glad you kept it. Though, we'll have to go on a road trip to get more.
( When he says that out loud, it suddenly sounds like the best damn idea in the world, getting out of Hawkins. Even if it's just temporarily. ) Too bad Rick didn't leave me with contacts. Finding a decent dealer is going to be a challenge. ( Especially since Eddie doesn't have a way to contact Rick anymore, nor is he ever going to consider reaching out to his dad. He's on his own for this one. )
[Steve's brows both lift at that even as he grabs another slice of pizza, pausing to consider before taking a bite to give himself a little more time to consider.] That... you know, might actually be good for us both? Get out of town for a little while but still know that we're coming back.
[He does at least have the good sense not to flat out say 'coming back before something can go wrong' but the intent is definitely there even if he doesn't say it out loud.]
( Eddie can't exactly argue with that. He has been eager to get out of Hawkins, practically since his mother's passing, when his old man started seeing him as nothing more than a drain on his bank account and later a potential accomplice. If it weren't for Steve, he probably would have gotten the hell out of dodge as soon as he could walk again after the whole Vecna bullshit. )
Yeah, when you put it that way? I don't think I'd mind a little getaway, drugs or no drugs.
[One brow inches higher, barely managing to keep his smile in check] So you're saying it doesn't have to be an actual quest, just a journey for journey's sake?
[He has, apparently, picked up a few things since the two of them have been hanging out. Either that or he's taking a wild guess and hoping he's using the correct type of trip in the correct place, and really it could be either.]
( Eddie's face softens at Steve's comment. So he has been paying attention. There is hope for Steve just yet. )
Exactomundo, my friend! It's not always about the destination but the sight-seeing along the way, the little side quests that bring you closer to nature and teach you something about yourself.
Yeah, not a whole lot of nature between here and Indy. [His brow creases then, realizing only once he's said it that Eddie hadn't specified a destination, only that he'd need to take a road trip] If that's even where we'd be going.
[He shakes his head] Not a lot of nature between here and most places, though.
If we set our sights on Indy, then yeah, not a lot of nature there. But if we broaden our horizons...
( Eddie chews on his bottom lip as he considers their options. It's not like Eddie is made of money, and he doesn't think Steve is either since he had to get a job despite the rich parents. Barring either of them winning the lottery, they can't leave town for that long. )
Chicago, maybe? Or even further East if we're not gonna end up stranded when we inevitably run out of money.
[He scratches the back of his neck, considering] Greenville Falls is about a half hour out, cross the state line into Ohio, and I know there's more state parks out along the same way if you keep going.
[Look, he had, maybe still has a dream of six kids and a camper, of course he'd research the nearest state parks]
( Eddie's eyes light up as Steve just casually drops that knowledge. Of course he would know this shit. Eddie finds it endearing. )
Well, there we go. Who knows, maybe you'll even get me to do a hike or two. I can't promise you I won't complain most of the time, but it'll be mostly for show. ( As much as Eddie makes a big fuss about hating sports and most physical activity, in reality, he doesn't mind it so much when it's a walk in nature. At least this time, he won't be on the run from an angry mob or walking to the location of one of Vecna's portals, which links the Upside Down to Hawkins. )
Well then I guess we'll just have to make sure it's a short nature walk and not a full on backpacking hike. Pretty sure they've got both, there. [He shrugs] If not, we keep going until we find somewhere that does.
[Despite everything, Steve likes a little afternoon hike himself, though it's been a while since he's had the chance.] So we're actually doing this?
( It's one thing for Eddie to talk about it, but to actually commit to doing it? It's been a long while since he's done a hike that wasn't a part of his attempt at surviving the whole Vecna ordeal. When he thinks about it, though, it would be nice to recontextualize the whole being outdoors thing. Instead of fighting for his life, being able to associate it with something pleasant, being able to associate it with Steve, would be worth the agony of gasp being physically active.
He nods slowly as if he was ever going to say anything other than yes. ) Yeah, Stevie, let's do it.
[Steve's smile is nearly incandescent and he isn't even going to try and turn it down at all, just nodding, because they're doing this, and even if it's just a day trip, a short drive over the border and an hour, maybe two of wandering along the nature preserve footpaths, he'll take it.]
So when do you have a couple days free? I'm pretty sure I'm the one who's going to have to work on getting the time off, but if you've got anything coming up that we'll have to plan around, now's the time to say so.
( Eddie can already feel him getting ahead of himself, plotting in his head what they're going to do, what he's going to pack before they even make solid plans. Steve's voice brings him back to the center. )
I don't have anything coming up. You say the word, sweetheart, I'll pack up the van, and we'll get the fuck out of here.
[That smile just spreads further, shaking his head a little] Knew there was a reason I liked you.
[Another little head-shake follows, taking another bite of his pizza to keep from rattling off ideas before he has a chance to actually think them over] Keith likes to work the long weekends himself, mostly I think he just doesn't trust me and Robin to handle it if it's even remotely busy. It's also something about corporate metrics, I don't know. But if we want to try for overnight, that would be the time.
( Eddie's eyes light up at Steve's remark, reminding himself not to get too far ahead. There is a big gap between platonic and non-platonic "like," after all.
Eddie snorts at the mention of Keith not trusting them. Having known the guy from school, he can definitely believe that. He thinks for a moment, rubbing his fingers across his jaw. An overnight sounds good and not just because it gives him that much time with Steve. Just getting away from Hawkins for longer than a day trip is something he thinks could really do them both some good. )
Yeah, okay, a long weekend will work for me. I just have to let my uncle know where we're going and when we'll be back, but he won't care if we fuck off for a couple days.
[He just nods, smile emerging again, he can't help it] Probably be happy not to have us underfoot for a couple days, won't say so, though.
[That's one of the things he appreciates about Wayne, that he doesn't seem to mind having Steve around, even at occasionally odd hours, but he can't imagine it's easy for him.]
Okay, I'll make sure Keith's not planning on scheduling me, and see if we need reservations to overnight in one of the parks. [He scratches the back of his neck, brow creasing] I think we've still got a tent, don't think it's even been used. Might have some other gear, I'll have to dig around a little.
( Eddie laughs, nodding in agreement. ) That he most definitely will. ( He sighs and thinks about what life would be like when he finally moves out. It will probably be weird, but also could be the best thing that could happen for both Eddie and Wayne. Maybe Wayne can finally move on without having to constantly worry about Eddie's next fuckup. )
Shit, yeah, good call. I think all we've got is some fishing gear and sleeping bags. Anything else from before I moved in with Wayne would've been burned up with the fire. ( As soon as the words are out, he winces with regret. He hasn't talked about it much, but it's not like it was much of a secret at the time. Then again, maybe that kind of gossip didn't reach Harrington's likes back then. )
Shit that was your place? [All he'd known was that it was a pretty nasty house fire, right about the time they'd all started worrying about the Upside Down, and that had kind of been more important than finding out more about the fire. Finding out that it had been where Eddie was living was... he wasn't sure, a twinge of something like regret, that there had apparently always been a chance that they never actually met.
He shakes his head a moment later, mostly to knock himself out of that particular thought spiral as he knows it's a pointless one, what with Eddie right here with him and all.] Fishing gear might be a good idea, though we'll have to catch and release, I'm no good at gutting them or cooking them.
( Eddie half expects Steve to make a big deal out of it. In a way, he's glad that Steve didn't even know. And just like that, Steve's focus is back on their planning instead of on the depressing backstory of one Eddie Munson. He lets out a breath he didn't even realize he had been holding. )
You and me both, man. If I had to fend for myself, I'd be a vegetarian; ain't no way I'm gonna be responsible for the kill. ( He wrinkles his nose in disgust. It really is a wonder he got accused of murder when the idea of even killing an animal horrifies him. )
[He smiles at that, warm and easy] So maybe we don't need the gear at all, unless you think we need a reason to sit and talk. [He gives a little shrug] But between you and me, I think we can figure out something else to do than fuck up some fish's day.
[The smile's back, wry and amused and even a little shy somehow] Unless you think making a trout late for work at its trout job sounds like a good way to spend the time.
( Eddie can't stop himself from giggling at Steve's commentary. The giggles just pour out naturally, ending with Eddie leaning against Steve, his hand resting gently on Steve's shoulder as if he needs to brace himself or he'll collapse perfectly on top of the other man. )
Shit, man. Since when did you become such a goddamn comedian?
Dunno what you're talking about, I've always been hilarious. [It's definitely a joke, even despite the dead-serious delivery, not even deadpan, just serious.]
Honestly though I don't really try to be funny, it just kind of happens sometimes? [It's the fact that Eddie's leaning on him like that that prompts the explanation, because it's comfortable in a way he hasn't really been in far too long, and he'd like to stay that way for a while.]
( Eddie nods, seemingly following along with Steve's explanation. If anything, that makes it worse. Or better, depending on one's outlook. Eddie enjoys that Steve hasn't even been trying; it's a part of their unique dynamic. )
Definitely goes to show I've just not been paying close enough attention, ( Eddie remarks, making no attempts to pull himself away from Steve. Now that he's this close to the other man, he's surprisingly comfortable. ) You should also keep with the not trying. In my experience, trying too hard just makes the jokes not land. And no, I'm not talking about Henderson. ( Or is he? )
